Archaic Vs modern

The project consists of a cataloguing and categorizing of a variety of different objects. It began by completing in depth research into different periods of history, observing how traditionally people lived their daily lives without modern conveniences. This insight into the past depicts what objects people used in previous centuries, and how this has continued to adapt through technological revolutions and innovations to form the products in use today. Grouping, formulating, and comparing the old to the new, shows how many objects we now take for granted, and how many basic items were seen as luxury to people living in bygone eras.

I was heavily influenced by artists Mark Dion and Song Dong. Both use categorizing in different ways to express their individual themes. Whether using display cases or the floor, there is a distinct emphasis on creating interesting collections.

Artefacts

This collection of photographs is a direct response to an archaic version of a product, and the new modern day equivalent. I have included above a selection of both old and new examples to demonstrate and summarize the photographs. All the objects featured in the series belong to myself and my family. My father had an array of old artifacts bestowed upon him after the death of my grandmother. This gives the photographs a more personal feel, as if I have touched the past in some way as I have these old things and have since made an impact upon my avid interest in history.

All comparisons have been thoroughly researched and are correct. These photographs originally formed a photobook, including six categories, each with three comparisons each. For example, in the beauty category, beetroot was used as a lip stain in the sixteenth century to create some definition to the lips, egg was used to brighten complexions and smooth the skin and honey was diluted and used to sweeten the smell due to the infrequency of washing during the sixteenth century. There were a multitude of different comparisons, and if you would like to know more please do not hesitate to contact me.

Character

In addition to my photo book, I took a number of other photos of artifacts that were in my father's possession. I did not capture these with their modern equivalents as I did not own some of the other examples. However, I still felt they should be seen and presented as they are interesting little pieces with lots of character.

Cataloguing Contradictions

This body of work explores an extensive variety of comparisons, focusing on the juxtaposition between the archaic and the modern.
